Even in the old west, you would have gotten strung up for doing something like this. It doesn't matter what the guy's criminal history, immigration status, or anything were.

The only thing that I disagree with is the ridiculous length of their sentences. That's it. They should do 2 to 3 years each. They should lose their jobs and be convicted felons. We should not lose a minute's worth of sleep over it. They did the crime, they do the time.
