"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men..." --- Lord John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton
So, what if someone told you, "there is no part of government, "your" govt., be it local, state, or federal, that is free of corruption" ? Would that shock or even surprise you? I wonder how many people truly realize that we live under a system of govt. that is based on lies and corruption, and without the lies and corruption, it would all collapse tomorrow. I also wonder how many people are just too frightened to think about it, since acknowledging it would require us to admit we're living in a house of cards, in the middle of a tornado. Is our political system just a big joke, with We The People as the punch line? While those in power always seem to be happy, (except for those in handcuffs) why aren't We The People also happy?
We're living in a time when the very principles our great country was founded on are routinely ignored, mocked, and challenged in a courtroom somewhere, and more often than not, our fate is then decided by some political hack in a robe, usually ignoring what We The People have said. (Prop-8 in Mexifornia?) Politically speaking, do we even matter anymore?
If the answer to that last question is no, we have no one to blame but ourselves...

Oscar Wilde's version of Lincoln's quote is more suited to the current situation:
"democracy means simply the bludgeoning of the people by the people for the people"
The world is a corrupt place. But periodically the peasants rise up, and chop off the heads of their tormentors.
I do believe some of the peasants are sharpening their knives and swords.
Sheep don't have knives and swords.
