As Muslims prepare to observe the holy month of Ramadan with fasting and prayer, U.S. troops across the Middle East are being "reminded" to respect the customs of the societies around them. Among the guidelines: Do not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public during the daily fast, and dress appropriately: no shorts or short skirts.
The rules don’t only apply while in public. In Iraq, personnel are encouraged not to eat, drink or smoke in the presence of Muslims during the daytime hours, according to U.S. Forces-Iraq spokesman 1st Lt. Joseph Larrew. As for Afghanistan, troops are "encouraged" (see: ordered) to be sensitive to the importance of fasting and not to eat or drink in front of Afghan citizens, she said.
Try to imagine the Marines fighting at Guadalcanal being ordered to observe Tojo’s birthday..."

No, we didn't. BUT we DID respect Japanese culture once we were IN the country, post bombing them back to the stone age.
We did this in Viet Nam too.
And during the Korean War.
And in Europe during WWI & WWII.
AS a veteran, I was taught that THIS kind of action is what separates US from countries that OCCUPY a country. We don't typically occupy, we LIBERATE.
The part we are missing since 1953, is the BOMBING THEM BACK TO THE STONE AGE SYNDROME.
I'm just sayin'.
Respecting, and even learning from, a country's culture is fine, so long as it's done after we destroy them.
