For years now, the social engineers have been at war with anyone who dares to disagree with them, and their ideas of how we all should live. The more PC'ized we become, the more vicious that war is waged. Whether it's red meat, light bulbs, cars, trans-fats, alcohol, candy, soda, or their favorite, tobacco, the social-Nazi's, most of whom are on the Left, have decided they, and they alone, know what's best for us. They use fear, hysteria, intimidation, punitive taxation, and so-called "experts" to make their case, but rarely do they provide documented, scientific evidence to back-up their claims.
Now i'm aware this is not a popular topic since i assume most here are non-smokers. I am a smoker. I only smoke in my own home, or in my own car, or in places i know i won't be offending anyone. I don't do this because it's PC, but because i try to have consideration for others, even though when it comes to smoking, most have none for me.
IMO, this topic has less to do with smoking, and more to do with a persons right to make their own free choices. The same Leftist social engineers who say i don't have a right to choose to smoke, or eat red meat, or use "normal" light bulbs, will fight to the death to make sure a woman has the right of free choice if she wants an abortion, or the "right" of gays to marry. Strange, but oh so typical of the Left.
Some years ago, in an effort to add more fear and hysteria to the argument about smoking, the term "second hand smoke" was invented. Basically, it claimed that even if you don't smoke, you're still in danger. About two years ago, several highly-acclaimed scientific studies were released which said in effect, the claims made re: second-hand smoke are unfounded and baseless". Sounds a lot like the global warming scam, doesn't it. So what does the Left do when their scams have been shot down? They repackage them and re-attack. And because of that well-used tactic, we now have "third hand smoke"!
Now don't get me wrong. I am, in no way, trying to say that tobacco is safe from harm. That's not my point. My point is, even though we are now ruled by the Nanny State that knows all, have i lost my right to free choice? And if i have, (and IMO, i/we have) what will "they" decide is next? Another thing i've noticed is that none of the things the Nanny State has deemed "unhealthy, unacceptable, or un-PC" are things those on the Left enjoy doing. You don't see an effort to ban things like Tofu, soy milk, (can you get milk from a soy bean?) bean sprouts, sushi, or expensive bottled water. Apparently, it's only non-Leftists who engage in harmful behaviour.
IMO, the debate here is not really about smoking, or eating a steak. It's about rights and the freedom to make our own choices...

If these boobs were right, those of us raised in the 50's and 60's, when the MOST people smoked, would have far greater rates of cancer than those before or after. There is no such bubble.
In fact, cancer rates are higher because of advances in testing and earlier testing. How many people died of cancer 50 years ago, who never knew they had it, until just before death. Who kept those records then? But cancer, while still deadly, is not like it was even 30 years ago. I agree with Spider, this is about power and control.
OT
how deep is the new snow / snow total from both storms?
Used to know this chick, worked in T-A-Wanna. She used to have an act at this bar smoking cigars from, and blowing smoke rings out of, a, ahhhh......... 'non-standard' orafice.
As an encore she had this 3 legged donkey that would go down on her - in a big way.
Three months later the donkey died of lip cancer.
COINCIDENCE? I think NOT!
When i knew her she smoked a pipe. He doesn't come around much any more, but when he does,... LOL
