This can't happen in America. But it has!
Couple Ordered to Stop Holding Bible Study at Home Without Permit
Thursday, May 28, 2009
Pastor David Jones and his wife Mary have been told that they cannot invite friends to their San Diego, Calif. home for a bible study — unless they are willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars to San Diego County.
"On Good Friday we had an employee from San Diego County come to our house, and inform us that the bible study that we were having was a religious assembly, and in violation of the code in the county." David Jones told FOX News.
"We told them this is not really a religious assembly — this is just a bible study with friends. We have a meal, we pray, that was all," Jones said.
A few days later, the couple received a written warning that cited "unlawful use of land," ordering them to either "stop religious assembly or apply for a major use permit," the couple's attorney Dean Broyles told San Diego news station 10News.
But the major use permit could cost the Jones' thousands of dollars just to have a few friends over.
For David and Mary Jones, it's about more than a question of money.
"The government may not prohibit the free exercise of religion," Broyles told FOX News. "I believe that our Founding Fathers would roll over in their grave if they saw that here in the year 2009, a pastor and his wife are being told that they cannot hold a simple bible study in their own home."

In Communist countries (Red China comes to mind) you also have to have a "government permit" for religious assembly.
Buy more bullets!

"The government may not prohibit the FREE exercise of religion," but they can sure charge you for it.
"Buy more bullets." ... Already have. Got a gun safe full of 'em... but I am hearing that .22 ammunition is hard to come by around here!
Huh...I wonder of they'd let them assemble if it was a Gay Church? They could invite that male Homecoming Queen, from L.A., then all would be right with the world.
It doesn't say how many people attended, or the regularity of said meetings. It's SD, they've got Ordinances about pooping!!! So I'm sure they have one about size and frequency of meetings.
I'm going Monday, to get a new 9mm, just can't decide which one. Ammo I've BEEN buying. Suggestions on a small frame pistol, 9mm type, pistol experts?
If ever someone came to my door with this, he or she better be prepared to die of acute lead poisoning
I shot a 9mm Ruger last week. Didn't like it. I'm going to get a .38 revolver.
Good choice for you Lady-Bug. Look at the S&W Airweight. It's a light weight .38 and very easy to handle and conceal. Well, maybe not in that sexy bathing suit you were wearing.
Steve, check out the Colt Kimber. it's a short barrel .9mm, and a good one too.
As for this topic, it'll never hold up in a court. Even in a Mexifornia court. I just hope these folks have the balls to sue.
If it's against the law to have friends over every week for a bible study - it should be against the law to have friends over every Sunday to watch football.
I've got a Beretta 92 FS in 9 mm. It's the the military/police issue model. I'm happy with it, but I have had it jamb when rapid-firing cheap target rounds. I've been told it was a combination of three things: New gun, cheap rounds, rapid firing - and that once I put a few hundred rounds through it, it wouldn't happen anymore.
All in all, if I had my choice between it and I my S&M Model 29 .44 revolver, I'd take the .44 - but I'm glad I have both.
And Spider is right, C-Bug - a .38 revolver is an excellent ladies gun. In fact, Smith & Wesson makes a 'Lady Smith 38'.
Go figure! :-)
Did I say "S&M"???
I meant S&W (of course).
Didn't I????? he-he
Jimbo,
you SAID, what I IMPLIED, about frequency and size.
Is it about RELIGION, or are they, stupidly, using that to get too many parked cars off the suburban streets every Tuesday night. I question HOW MANY people. I've seen some ridiculously large "study" groups.
OR
Where I live now is mainly college students. They have a tendency to "study" beer, loud music, and loud talking in very large groups, mainly on Fri night, Sat night, or Super Bowl Sunday. They are obnoxious when sober, openly antagonistic when drunk, and generally think I'm shouldn't, AND I quote the young, deep thinker here, "...shouldn't count on a parking space, just because you pay rent here!!" Thank you commie college professors for that line of philosophy.
I doubt the SD Bible study takes such a Socialistic view of local parking problems, but the article never says, 10 studiers, or 50, or 75. It's just the way my feeble, twisted mind works, I recognize over officious, idiotarian, bureaucracy when I see it.
(I might come from spending the last two weeks, dealing with minor gub'ment officials, while trying to get my kettle korn concession up and running for the summer)
I'm like Jimbo, some minor court will knock this down so quick, it won't be funny. BTW, where's the ACLU? Aren't they supposed to protect us, and the Constitution, from over zealous gub'ment or private infringement of our rights!!?? I guess they're too busy fighting with religion, to fight for religion.
Gun Nut Stuff
I should have been more specific my friends, with my pistol search questions, I'm looking for my CCW gun. How big / small / concealable is the Kimber?
Schteveo, Try a Colt Mustang +II in .380. I know most will say .380 is a mouse gun, but it will hold 7 rds., comes in SS, and works real well in a small of the back holster.
Stevie, the Kimber is small enough to carry around without a problem, assuming your heart is set on a .9mm. IMO, you can do more damage with a baseball bat than with a .380!
Personally, i prefer revolvers, especially my S&W Chief Spl. (circa 1955 and still perfect) and my Colt Detective Spl. (circa 1970) Neither one has ever let me down, unlike the Beretta Model 92 i used to have, which weighed a ton.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Okay, so a quick synopsis of what I just posted.
I bolded the word Congress, because the 1st amendment prohibition against the free excersize of religion and freedom to assemble peaceably was originally levied against congress, only. It did not apply to the state, and By extension, counties. However, the 13th amendment, and subsequent case law, specifically DeJonge v. Oregon (1937) (free excersize) and Cantwell v. Connecticut (1940) (Freedom to assemble) was incorporated to the states, and by extension, counties, cities, etc.
However, there is one stupid ass, piece of shit court ruling, the purveyors of which should be tried, drawn and quartered for passing on, which states that the rights are not abridged as long as the permission is granted by the AHJ as long as a fee is paid.
Yes, that's correct. The ruling stated that we have to pay for our rights, and that currently, it is perfectly legal for a county government to deny your fundamental, constitutional rights simply because you cannot afford to pay for the permit.
This is also where a lot of anti-gunners are going with registration and licensing. Make the license so expensive that no one can afford it. The right isn't abridged under current law, because anyone can have their right, so long as they can pay for it.
My advice to the good people in question? Don't pay the fee, use the money to hire a lawyer and take their asses to court. Get this stupid ruling overturned, based upon the idea that it affects minorities the most, since they cannot afford to buy their rights. Compare it to the polling tax! That will turn some heads!
I think that it is more and more a question of how low can we go before we lose control completely.
I'm waiting for the day that free excercise of religion is banned unless it is kept from public view.
I've got a new S&W .45. can't wait to take it to the range.
Decided that I'm tired....dropped retirement paperwork yesterday. 17 November will be my last day in uniform and 28 February is the last day on the rolls. (yes, that is 102 days of paid vacation saved up) Anybody know of a good job?
I think I'm going to enter academia and be vilefied by my peers (not you guys) by teaching history as I see it.
Sorry I have been around much guys, I had no idea living 80 miles from work and being the boss could be so time consuming.
Like your avatar Schtevo.
Congrats on your retirement Alan. Just remember, the hardest part of doing nothing, is knowing when you're done. ;)
I had my heart set on a .380, but their hard to find, and finding ammunition is harder still. I'm moving up to a small 9mm, no shortage of that here.
Tanks friends.
Red China looks good.........On a white tablecloth
Good suggestion, Jimbo. The Lady Smith looks pretty darn good!
Alan, Congrats on retirement! Where will you be retiring to?
Believe it or not, it looks like I may spend my first year of retirement back in Iraq. This time I will be teaching Iraqi Air Force, and never have to leave the airport. Chances are much slimmer that I will get shot at than they were last time.
the benefit.... in one year I can earn enough to pay off all bills, most of my mortgage, and live off of for about a year so that I can work on a PhD. My kids will be out of the peoples democratic republik of kalifornication....and we can settle back into our house about 94 miles north of Annie on I-15.
Honestly, I can't wait to put my golf clubs to daily use.
Alan - COOL!
I know about hazard pay. You wouldn't believe what they pay me to live in the middle of the Specific.
But then again - maybe you would!!!
Congrats! You deserve it! I am more than happy to see some of my taxes go to the retirement for you and the many like you. May God bless and protect you and your family - you've damn sure earned it!
Oh - and there are lots of folks on this project who are even older than me (WHOA!) and several are moving to the Texas Hill Country from the West Coast to retire - seems prices and laws fit us old farts. So I know what you mean about getting the "F" out of Caliwillfukyou.
BTW, where is Annie?
"I'm going to get a .38 revolver."An S & W Model 61, 1-7/8" bbl., 5-round is nice and small-packs a punch, though.
BTW, where is Annie? She's around, watching, reading, waiting for the right time to return.
