Here's my personal experience with Portland, Oregon as a whole, as well as Washington, Idaho, the whole N. West for that matter. The place is as racist as anywhere I've ever been. Oddly crossing into Canada seems to stop this racial idiocy.
Portland is the only place I've ever been where my black co-worker was ignored and denied service in a restaurant. I heard the word nigger yelled at him on 4 or 5 occasions too. I don't recall seeing even ONE minority policeman out there, so that alone leaves questions in my mind.
I wasn't at this arrest, but for a change, I'll side with the minorities. I've met there counter parts, and I think I know what they're up against.
AUSTIN, Texas — An angry crowd threw rocks and bottles at police in riot gear in Austin, Texas, hours after an officer shot two men, killing one of them.
Police say eight officers had minor injuries and eight patrol cars were damaged as authorities tried to break up the crowd of about 100 people that gathered after the Monday morning shooting.
Police Chief Art Acevedo said the shooting occurred after police investigating complaints of shots fired over the weekend approached a car with three men inside. He said an officer shot one man who made a movement toward a weapon when the officer tried to wake him up, and shot another who ran toward him.
Steve's comment is pretty hard for me to understand, seeing how very liberal that part of the country is.
As for the incident, this is a common occurrence. I've worked in every black area of NYC, and i can't count the times this has happened. In fact, on several occasions, it turned into full-blown riots! Blacks don't generally like seeing one of their own being arrested, no matter the reason. First the crowd gathers, and realizing they outnumber the Police, (which they always do) the "chanting" starts, then the bottles and bricks start flying. And several times, gunfire from the crowd.
I know of two police officers here in NYC who were shot and killed at such incidents back in the wild 70's.
I spent quite a few years up in the netherlands, teying to make a difference, trying to make a living. I'm with Spider.
Just crossing the street one day out of 12 years of abuse (and some good experiences too) this guy started screaming out about some white guy is there, pointing at me.
My quickest reaction was to turn around and yell back, "WHERE?" and got the hell out of there as soon as I could.

The problem of the people bitching about the cops is on going. And it is a weird thing that the place is at one time racist and liberal.
The good people of the Northwest think the gub'ment should help minorities, the just want them to do it, somewhere else.
Oregon in general and Portland in particular are so damn progressive that I'm surprised that the police attempted to arrest the vodka thief. They should have allowed him to drink the hooch, taken him to an alcohol detox. facility and thence to an outpatient program for disadvantaged minorities. There he could have been allowed to sort out his "family of origin issues" and his "rage issues."
If you'd like to see the real Oregon, just take a look at Ax Men on the history channel. Had the Rygaards, the Brownings, the Pihls, the Connors or the Smiths come across this asshole, they would have kicked his ass up between his shoulder blades. Problem solved.

Impossible Steve, Portland is the liberal capital of the northwest and liberals are not racist. They only point racism out in others.
