Global Warming? Tell it to the Caribou!

~

This caribou was found this last winter frozen in place. It was found by DEC personnel during a site inspection in Kuparuk, AK - about 40 miles west of Prudhoe Bay on the North Slope. It was about -45º F, the wind-chill was about -80º F.

I’ve been to Kaparuk – but when I was there it was a balmy -78º F in the shade. The difference between me and this caribou: I wore full arctic gear and only stepped outside the truck for 90 seconds (or less) at a time. The truck heater running full blast kept it just below freezing inside.

My current assignment is much more hospitable.

Warmest wishes, Jimbo.

I'll be in Prudhoe Bay this Aug.

Several members of the usual gang of idiots are flying up in private planes to Alaska to hunt moose & squirrel. We're planning a side trip above the arctic circle.

Ah, yes - Prudhoe in August.

Many people don't realize the route of the annual North Slope caribou migration is driven by the wind. Well, actually by mosquitoes. The little bastards run in packs of about 200 trillion so the caribou always travel against the strongest breeze possible.

You have to put rocks in your pockets or they'll carry you away.

Jimbo's recommendation: Go to Talkeetna and get a bush pilot to fly you up Ruth Amphitheater in Denali. I would try to describe it to you - but that would be impossible. I can promise you it would be a couple of hours you would never, ever forget.

Another good side trip is the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula. Go camping at Chrome Bay. I dare you. :-)

If you go through Soldotna, say hello to my family!

Yeah... I dare you to to camping at Chrome Bay too! Say hi to the wolf spirits for me... well... for Jimbo (since I wasn't there).

And Jimbo, I'm glad you didn't freeze your a** off in Kuparuk!

weather is not climate. Weather is not climate. Weather is not climate. Weather is not climate.

Weather. Is. Not. Climate.

Saying that an exceptionally cold weather event is evidence against global warming is no different than the opposition claiming that a particularly hot day (of which we've had many recently) is evidence FOR it.

The scientific fact of the matter is this:

Weather is not climate. Singular weather events mean nothing in the greater scheme of global climate, of which we know pathetically little, and of which we'll probably never truly understand anything more than the meme that I posted above several times.

Any attempt to measure our climate by anecdotal evidence (it sure was cold last weekend) or by weather events (Hurricane Katrina) is nothing more than baseless propoganda.

How about, instead, posting about the fact that global mean temperatures have not gone up in over a decade, and in fact, for the last half decade, we've been cooling back down?

How about when viewed on a 100 year timescale, our current warming is within measurement factors of error from previous, reversed warming trends?

How about when viewed on a 1500 year timescale, showing our current warming to be smaller than several previous warmings, all of which have reversed themselves with no efforts by mankind to do a damned thing?

There are some great chile (or should I say chilly?) recipes for free range, lean and heart-healthy, reindeer

Hmmmm....???...I ain't buying it.

I think this mini-moose was D-E-D, laying on it's side, then some bored drillers "stood" it up, and snapped the photos.

The idea that it froze mid-stride is Bull Shit.

Animals are naturals at protecting themselves. If it was that cold, the reindeer would have laid down, ass into the wind, nose under a front leg to stay warm.

I repeat, the idea that it froze mid-stride is pure, unadulterated, 100%, Grade-A, bull effing shit.

You guys can't have bought this as authentic, could you?

Ya have to call it climate change cause it's just too embarassing to continue to say Global Warming as the world's temperature keeps dropping. [major GW report scheduled for 6/1/09 release was delayed for a week.....cause it was snowing-HA!]

A dog tied to a post, will lay down in extreme cold. A bear (and several others) will curl when hibernating. But an untethered animal (wild or tamish) will continue to move until it dies. It knows (with out all the details) that a pumping heart spreads warm blood from the center of the body to the extremities. It knows that it's survival depends on the circulation of warm blood and hopes that he has enough energy/food to keep moving.

This also applies to humans (wild or tamed) as well.

That said, the critters probably should have fallen over due to wind, thermal changes, etc.

One thing liberals have taught us all - NEVER let insignificant facts get in the way of a good story :)! [I think the Klingons were the 1st to make that statement]

I heard a rumor that weather is caused by climate.

I'm trying to think where I heard it.........

Oh, well.

I have to agree with you Steve. I don't think it's possible for that dear to have frozen in place as shown.

And Goob makes some good points about global warming, meaning, it's all bullshit. As i've said many times, the GW hysteria has nothing to do with the climate (or weather) and all to do with "control". The power and ability to control how others live. The power to force (via laws) the masses to live as those on the Left feel we should live. (ie: small cars, less power consumption, etc.)

LOL Schteveo & Spider! - I wondered if anyone would call me on it! From what I understand, it was an animal that died of natural causes and froze solid. The crew found it, stood it up, and photographed it.

Place and temperature are accurate. (As well as the inability of most humans to tolerate the wind chill for more than 90 seconds even wearing arctic gear.)

Cheers to our own resident myth-busters.

BTW – I got some pictures of Bigfoot in a freezer. Y’all want to see them? :-)

Bigfoot chili.

I have a good recipe for that too

No, but if you've got any more pics of C-Bug...

I thought so Jimbo. (no outline in the snow or flat spots of the body) In fact, i remember doing something similar to a waitress i used to know, but as i recall, she was still alive. I'll tell you about it some other time. Nice try though. ;)

You can fool some of the people all of the time, and you can fool all of the people some of the time, but you can't peddle that kinda lame crap HERE, anytime.

Good try though.

I do wanna see the Bigfoot though.
