I'm never surprised at the lengths they'll go to in the Southwest, to get rid of illegal aliens. But I'm surprised that the people elect and re-elect Joe Arpaio, and John McCain. It seems odd, along those lines, that the same voters keep McCain AND elect a body who will do this.

Arizona Clears Strict Immigration Bill
.
Arizona lawmakers on Tuesday passed one of the toughest pieces of immigration-enforcement legislation in the country, which would make it a violation of state law to be in the U.S. without proper documentation.
It would also grant police the power to stop and verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being illegal.
The bill could still face a veto from Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer. A spokesman for Ms. Brewer said she has not publicly commented on the bill. Ms. Brewer, a Republican, has argued for stringent immigration laws.
Under the measure, passed Tuesday by Arizona's lower house, after being passed earlier by the state Senate, foreign nationals are required to carry proof of legal residency.
Immigrants' rights groups roundly criticized the bill. "The objective is to make life miserable for immigrants so that they leave the state," said Chris Newman, general counsel for the Los Angeles-based National Day Laborer Organizing Network. "The bill constitutes a complete disregard for the rights of nonwhites in Arizona. It effectively mandates racial profiling."
The bill's author, State Sen. Russell Pearce, was in a committee session Tuesday and couldn't be reached, his offices said. Mr. Pearce, a Republican, represents the city of Mesa, in Maricopa County, whose sheriff, Joe Arpaio, has gained a national reputation for his tough stance on immigration enforcement. A spokesman for Mr. Arpaio didn't return a request for comment.
The bill is different from an earlier version, giving protections for church and community organizations from criminal prosecution for transporting or harboring illegal immigrants.
.
McCain's views and the AZ Legislators seem to be 180 degrees out, yet both are elected by the same voters. Schizophrenia? And I'm torn on the church thing. Sorry, but a Catholic Church has been considered a Sanctuary for almost 2000 years, cutting across both time and countries and history. I'm skeptical of ANY law body removing that common idea. IMO, if the church wants them, let them LIVE in the Sanctuary, sleep, eat, learn, poop...all of it, but if they leave that edifice, arrest them.
.
The church has a rule too, render unto Caesar... Granted, it's a fine line, but it works most of the time.

Apparently, great minds think alike. ;)
One question on implementation.
How do you prove you are legal? If I were stopped, I would have to go home & get passport/birthcertificate, etc.
Drivers license only works if the DMV verifies citizenship prior to awarding - not all states do.
A national ID would work, but then you have all the privacy rights issues.
Just asking...
You can prove you're legal by knowing what famous person Joe DiMaggio was married to. If you don't know who that was, or who Joe was, you would/should be summarily deported or executed, which ever is more cost efficient and complys with the local environmental regulations.
Also, we already have a national ID card. It's called a social security card, but it's worthless since you can buy one on any street corner for less than the price of a pack of cigarettes.
Of course the paper SSN Card is the only "thing" that is legal, and has no image, etc. to map to one person.
You are also supposed to keep it "in a safe place" so that it isn't lost.
In AZ they are looking for a DL AND a valid green card. If the folks involved are legal or worse for some citizens, they usually are bi-lingual, and 2nd generation have little or no accent. Usually the person fitting the legal alien or citizen format will have valid ID on hand, and with current and matching addxs.
If you're illegal, no green cards, no ID, mismatched ID or addxs, you shuffle, stutter, sweat "...no habla...", RUN, etc. Even for an AZ small town cop, there's no FBI profiler training needed.
Much like you or I keep our DL on us, Legals keep that Green Card handy. And trust me, the LEGAL aliens who used to live next door, were MUCH harder on illegals than police or ICE will ever be. LEO's and ICE generally follow the law. The legals tend to kick asses, let the air out of tires, CALL ICE about illegal jobs and employers, generally make it hard on the illegals. They do it because the illegals cause them so much trouble with LEO's and the general populace.
I still have a problem with ID cards, but when societies get to certain sizes, they become a necessary evil. And just for the record, legal people DO get into trouble for NOT having a DL on them. I spent a night in jail once because of a DMV snafu.
Alaska has nice jails, BTW.
