We, too, paid more in taxes than what we used to make (and not so long ago). Going to the local tea party tonight. The dollar is supposed to be "man’s personal energy reduced to portable form, endowed with powers he himself does not possess, enabled to go where he cannot reach, to lift burdens he cannot touch, to serve lives he never knew” and I'm not talkin' about the government's public dole.
Yeah, our dollars are serving lots of lives, except our own. There are a couple of million people here in NYC that should be kissin my ass today, but i have yet to feel one little smootch. Maybe ebonics doesn't have a word for grateful, except "mo", as in mo of yo money.
Went to the Raleigh Tea Party, took my 12 y/o grandson. What a great civics lesson.
Waiting to see the local news to see how many people they "say" were there. I'm pretty good at crowd counting from directing traffic at a local university years ago. I'm calling it 5000 to 7500, it ebbed and flowed as people got off work in the state offices. [mrs schteveo recognized a NUMBER of people from her division] We left after an hour, my old ass can't take but so much sitting on a stone wall, even for a good cause.
Across the street there were anti-Tea Party protesters. Same signs, different event.

And there were a plethora of the typical, anti-American, pro-everything else signs about war mongering, illegal immigrants, not enough freedom because of GWB and Cheney, big oil, big pharm, etc, you've seen them.

We filed, and got some back even (we'll call that an intrest free loan to the feds) Good thing we did, we have been living off of it for the last 4 months while I have been steadily putting off accepting one of the high paying jobs I have been offered....oh, scratch that, I have been taking every part time job offered since I retired.
Well, as much as I hate to say it, we OWED the feds $60. But the state owes us almost a grand.
Tax wise, I'm supporting any candidate who is FOR a simple tax. No exemptions, no loopholes. Just a flat tax for every damned body, business or whatever group who makes a profit.
Can you bend over any further? Well, you're gonna have to because the VAT, (value added tax) is coming, just like our socialist friends have in the EU. And they're saying it's almost a certainty that we'll get hit with it.
Also noticed that FOX was "the only" network showing the Tea Party rally today as it was happining.
