FORT HOOD, Texas — A military mental health doctor facing deployment overseas opened fire at the Fort Hood Army base on Thursday, setting off on a rampage that killed 11 other people and left 31 wounded. Authorities killed the gunman, and the violence was believed to be the worst mass shooting in history at a U.S. military base.
The shooting began around 1:30 p.m., when shots were fired at the base's Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening, said Lt. Gen. Bob Cone at Fort Hood.
"It's a terrible tragedy. It's stunning," Cone said.
A law enforcement official identified the shooting suspect as Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case publicly.
Two other soldiers taken into custody following the deadly rampage were later released, the office of a Texas congressman said. A spokesman for Rep. John Carter says Fort Hood officials informed Carter's office of the release. Carter's congressional district includes the Army base.
A Fort Hood spokesman could not confirm that the two had been released.
It was unclear what the motive was. U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said the Army major was about to deploy overseas, though it was unclear if he was headed to Iraq or Afghanistan and when he was scheduled to leave. Hutchison said she was told about the upcoming deployment by generals based at Fort Hood.

So, Nidal Malik Hasan, was openly against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but he was still in the Army and about to be deployed. Somebody's ass ought to be in a HUGE sling over this one.

Hasan tried to get OUT of the Army. Always been a Muslim, was in the Army on 9/11.
Under a great deal of stress from treating PTSD patients.
Took a lot of grief for BEING Muslim.
39 y/o, joined the military out of HS, went to med school on Army's dime. Tried to pay the Army back to get out.
Family didn't know he was about to be deployed.

I have no problem with Muslims in the military. They were there when I was in too. The problem here isn't Islam. His problems should have excluded him from staying in the Army LONG ago, regardless of his religious beliefs.
It's NOT an issues of Muslim or not Muslim.
This guy was a ticking time bomb, who worked in a medical facility, AS A SHRINK, his co-workers were mental health workers, he has a recent record of outbursts with co-workers, and THEY ALL F**KING MISSED IT.
He went on a random shooting spree, and shot whomever he could find. He didn't go after anyone who he had a prior problem dealing with.
And nobody saw this guys fuse was lit? Bullshit.

I'll bet there's a bunch of our people at Ft. Hood who would disagree with that, although many will have to disagree posthumously. But who cares how many of our brave warriors are murdered so long as we're seen as a compassionate and welcoming nation.
And why would anyone think his religion had anything to do with this, simply because he shouted Allahu Akbar before he opened fire. What many Americans fail/refuse to understand is that we are involved in a religious war with radical Islam. Perhaps it's because here in the 21st century, the idea of a religious war does not compute for us. But radical Islam is not in the 21st century. They're still in the 10th century, where fighting a religious war is perfectly normal, especially against an enemy who just doesn't get it.

Lady-Bug, that he shouted that phrase has now been confirmed by several people, including a few of his victims. And, it has been reported that he was "fearful" of being deployed to Afganistan, which IMO is bullshit. Just how many psychiatrists get front-line combat duty?
But, right now we're all using info we're getting from the media, which means we could be very wrong about everything we're talking about, although i don't doubt the basic facts. We'll see.

I got OUT of the Navy because my boss was a drunk hetero. Worst boss, civilian or military I ever had. Oddly, his boss was a closet queen with a "beard" and two kids. One of the best bosses I ever had.
Except that he used to "work over" the reports he sent to Congress. But that was his attempt at going to Leavenworth, not mine.

Evidently Hasan gave seminars at Walter Reed to get "infidels" to convert to Islam. Isn't that the same Army where they no longer have a CHRISTIAN prayer before a sanctioned meal?

Contingency means possibility, or possible event or outcome.
How do we have a contingency plan, as the PRIME plan? It's ridiculous.
Not nearly as ridiculous as saying, "it's not a muslim issue". Would this have happened had he been a Buddhist, a jew, or a Hindu? And only "radical" muslims are the problem? Well, which ones are the radicals? We only find out "after the fact", like today.
We've lost thousands of our warriors in Iraq and Afganistan because the only way to tell a radical muslim from a non-radical, (assuming you believe they exist) is which one happens to be shooting at you at the moment. And the second that radical runs out of ammo, he goes back to being a non-radical.
When your house is infested with bugs, you don't just get rid of the ones you see, you get rid of them all! But we in Amerika seem to invite and welcome infestation, and we still haven't got the good sense to realize the cost.
As I recall there was a problem of people thinking Italians were an infestation too once. THEY'RE all in some kind of gang, or if not, they who the mob guys are.

Steve my friend, the flaw in your argument is that you're equating local crimes with international terrorism. And while you're right about members of those groups of immigrants being involved in crimes when they came here, not one of them ever attacked America or killed an American soldier serving his country. Not one of them ever took a blood oath to destroy this country and it's people.
I'm not saying that every muslim is a terrorist. But i am saying that, so far, every terrorist is a muslim. That's a pretty tough fact to ignore, especially when they themselves openly admit it and brag about it. Of course, if someone comes up with a way to distinguish between radicals and non-radicals, the problem will be solved and our country will be a lot safer. Until that happens, i'll stay with my bug-bomb solution.
