Yep, that's my experience too! I quit trying to 'understand' my better half YEARS and YEARS and YEARS ago!!
We finally realized that 'understanding' was psychobabble. I'd rather go with acceptance. And after 40 odd (and I mean that in many ways) years together, I'll settle for acceptance. Any day.
