Water, water, every where, Nor any drop to drink.

The tiny Pacific island nation of Tuvalu has declared a state of emergency due to a severe shortage of fresh water, with officials saying Monday that some parts of the country may only have a two-day supply.

New Zealand's Foreign Minister Murray McCully said his country was working with the Red Cross to deliver aid workers and supplies as quickly as possible.

He said Tuvalu first declared the emergency last week and the situation had deteriorated since then.

Water was scarce in the capital, Funafuti, and a number of outlying islands, McCully said, adding that he had received reports saying some places would run out of fresh water within days.

A New Zealand defense service C-130 plane arrived Monday carrying two desalination units and a number of water containers, McCully said.

Say, that's odd. An island, surrounded by salt water, and they don't have fresh water. It's odd, very odd to me that no one can fix this.

For, what, the last two or three years we've been talking survival, survival strategies, how to survive sans today's conveniences. If they send them some sheets of lexan, 2 x2's, wire, nails and wash tubs, they can be solar distilling water in 30 minutes. OH WAIT!

Take a big pot, the lid for that big pot, hang the lid half off the pot with a piece of wire, or string, or a strip of cloth. Put a smaller container under that lower edge, boil some sea water.

Viola, fresh water!!

This looks like a MODERN problem, reported by MODERN thinkers, capable of seeing and reporting just MODERN problems.

There, like here, they are waiting for someone else to do it.

I'm betting the locals aren't sitting around. The gub'ment officials see a quick buck though.

Like I said, any twit with a pot, a lid, a string and a bowl can make fresh water out of sea water!

A caveman can do it

I thought I'd get more ways to fix the water or at least more people saying their gub'ment is scamming the world with this crap!

I had a thought, how many coconuts are there on those islands? You can't wash or cook with coconut water, but it would help supplement their water needs.

I was thinking of 'creating' salt water with a salinity like the ocean. Say about 5 gallons. THEN set up my simple distillation unit (pot, lid, string, catch bowl) and see how long it takes to make ONE GALLON of fresh water from it!

If I get the time today, I'll let you know how it goes.
