Mrs. Schteveo read me an article on the way home from her office yesterday about PROOF of climate change NOT being in the climate actually getting cooler or hotter. It's provable via a slight pH change in ocean water.
It's changed by .01 % since the early 1800's, and could change another .05% to .06% over the NEXT 90 years.
In case your missing the significance, I don't think there is one. Or at least, I didn't see it.
The previously NOTED changes could easily be explained away by the differences in producing pH Paper in 1800, and NOW!!
But I digress into side details. IF there's NO change in temperature, up or down, HOW can it be climate change? Shouldn't it be a Climate Sameness Problem then?
Whats interesting is that he references geologists and ice sheets then mentions glaciers melting into the sea in his article as the problem. Ice sheets are FLOATING ice so melting does not add any weight to the ocean and glaciers are negligible compared to the vast oceans .. that is if ocean weight were really an issue.
I had some of the sci channels on last night with the kids in tow. I qualified it by telling them they need to learn to separate the Sci from the sci-fi. After all, it was earth day. Satellites tracking tha amount of heat and ice in Greenland for the past few decades is not enought data to show long term events. And extrapolation of these short-term events is not scientific. It is conjecture. and even then the effects can not be deemed as catastrophic. That too is a bit of a stretch. To say that a few miles of ice weighed the earth down this much is like saying the eggshell crushed the chick inside, or the icing on a cake crushed the cake. The super egshell thin crust of the earth is 65 miles thick. The thickest ice is 2 miles thick, and the largest change in ice thickness anywhere on earth is a few hundred feet. A few hundred feet of ice weighs nothing in the grand scheme of that which is earth. Besides, show me the glaciers in Haiti, you fucking idiot.
You'd have a better chance of convincing me that the big, heavy buildings that we are building are weighing the earth down and causing earthquakes.
Some of this is valid. However, what they postulate the effects are or will be are ludicrous. One must be careful not to dismiss accurate data. It's how it's interpreted and used which is often flawed, providing the original data is accurate and not tampered with in any way. And often the conclusions are subjective rather than objective in scope and magnitude. This is NOT science by any stretch of the imagination, but possible scenarios most of which a preposterous at best.
