We control the horizontal, we control the vertical

Is this the end or just the beginning? (Led Zep)

OK, here's what I know about Blogetry.

They were blacklisted by many companies and gub'ment agencies because of trademark violations, spam servers, trojan horses and PORN.

This is the equivalent of closing down an underground magazine that is re-issuing Playboy and Screw pictorials, where the ink contains AIDs infected blood, and the paper cuts could kill you. i.e., no worthwhile content, but illegal content out the whazoo.

But the bigger problem here is that now the feds have opened the door to official censorship, and with this bunch of commies in power, we all know what that will lead to.

One of the things i hate most about the internet (and TV) are the endless ads/pop-ups/drop-downs, etc. (spam) that are shoved down your throat every minute. Some are visible, some are not, and some are deeply embedded in your computer. IMO, they all should be banned.

But, having said that, i can also understand (and predict) a First Amendment argument here. What is to be banned, and by whom? We know it's not possible to eliminate what is behind most of the ads, which is insatiable greed, but what about ads that are politically or religiously motivated? Do we leave it up to the Marxists in power to decide which are right and which are wrong? As for copyrighted material, well, there are laws to protect that. But blocking things (porn, etc.) that some find offensive is getting into some really deep water. What happens when "someone" is offended by sites that show things that you like? Then what? Either the internet is going to be a totally free zone, or it's not. But who will decide?

Ooops. Maybe we all over-reacted. Here's the latest.

"We control the horizontal, we control the vertical"

Outer Limits: We have taken control of your television., right? Do TVs even have horizontal/vertical control anymore?

I'm a little wishy-washy on this, too. From Steve's account, they certainly deserved to be shut down because they had malicious and harmful content. But I've wondered since I was a kid - as Spider alludes; who determines 'redeeming social value'? For instance, to "progressives", the Bible has no redeeming social value. To conservatives, Obama has no 'redeeming social value' and so should be banned. I could go for that.

Listen, shutting this down was a public service. You don't cry "euthanasia" when they execute healthy convicts, because it opens the door for the gub'ment to kill us all.

I've cleaned more computers that got infecterated at Blogetry than any other host.

Steve .. as bad as it may have been, it was shut down without a trial and crossed a line not yet crossed. The first time they cross a line it always for "the children" or a "special case" or in a "limited way" but that one time becomes a precedent for the future. You need to look at the big picture.
