Not really any topic, just a curiosity

OK so in Somalia there is zero government, zero infrastructure, zero safety but yet the people have cell phones with funky ringtones? Can someone please explain this to me?

Oh and as for the extremists banning anything than can corrupt the mind .. so walking around with weapons and slaughtering civilians to gain power doesn't corrupt?

Your confusing government with commerce.

She's lucky she just has to deal with the mullahs. We've got the friggin' FCC.

QUOTABLE QUOTES

"Government incompetence is built upon the bedrock of the infamous bureaucrat triple threat: affirmative action hiring; government school graduates in positions of authority; granting government contracts to the lowest bidder. " – H.R. Hambo

Yea but Cell phones require towers and landlines and electricity and internet etc .. you know .. things that generally require some kind of infrastructure.

Satellite phones require no such infrastructure.

Having an angry and armed Somalia is just what the terrorists want. And they will ban/outlaw anything that distracts the people from that aim. It also introduces "control" to a country who's people are clearly out of control. The result will be an entire nation of terrorists, which is odd, since they already are. (remember our Blackhawk that went down there?) The difference is, they will then be controlled by Al Qaeda with a very specific agenda, (US) rather than a bunch of wild, aimless warlords.

As always, my soulution for Somalia is based on simplicity. Send in the Stealth bombers and vaporize them now, rather than waiting ten years to realize they've become a major problem.

Missy,
Spider is right. Cell phones require JUST the towers, repeaters and a generator to run. Generally there are trailers you can buy or "flats" with a raisable tower with a hand or electric winch, a repeater and a generator for emergency situations. I expect the Somalias are using U.N. "donated" cell tower set ups.

If just half the towers in Somalia are the same type, you can call anywhere there is overlap of tower coverage. And 90% of the people are huddled in 20% of the country. That makes coverage easier too.

You only need working land lines if your trying to call a land line phone.

Working land mines would be a better idea.
