We're Just A Bunch of Hayseeds

Put on your overalls. Skip the shoes. Get the horse out of the barn and go plow the field.

We don't need no education....

Judge: Education not a right

South Dakota students aren't guaranteed a quality education, a circuit judge ruled Wednesday, finding that the way the state pays for education does not violate the state constitution.

The state's funding system has room for improvement, Wilbur acknowledged, but she also found that education is not a fundamental right; the state need not prepare students for college or "meaningful employment"; and the testimony of the superintendents was unreliable.

Let's get the semantics straight.

Education IS a right, as in, you have a right to get a good education, and the government should not stop you from doing so.

GOVERNMENT FUNDED education, however, is not a right, it is a priveledge, granted to those who pay taxes in the state,a nd available to them should they choose to use it.

That is why private schools exist, and why I think that the voucher system is the only fair way to deal with education. When the government school isn't up to snuff, then withhold your tax money that goes to schooling, via vouchers, and get yourself a private school education.

I guess I cannot disagree with anything the judge said there. The government is in competition with private schools. If they choose to let their services get lax enough that they loose business, tough shit.

Wait, wait, wait, this IS good news, and here's why.

There is NOW a legal precedent for parents needing to provide a DECENT education themselves for their kids. There already exists copious ammunition proving that the state run education systems SUCK. Now a SD judge says, "...and the state doesn't have to care that the schools suck...and there's nothing saying that the schools should un-suck, if money is the issue...". But money IS ALWAYS the issue with public education.

I like it!

Especially beings I'm considering homeschooling my grandson for the next two years, at least.

C-bug,
isn't this a good admission from the state? Or am I wrong?

But if no one takes responsibility to do this, won't we end up with even more people for the state to take care of because they can't take care of themselves?

CFC,
if the states and feds will step outta the way, parents can get re-involved, like they used to be. The parents will quit hearing how the schools hands are tied by the states and the feds and schools will go back to being local entities, like dog catching and garbage cleanup.
