I wish this guy was MY School Superintendent

.
Have surplus? Superintendent will scavenge

.
Five pickups, some hauling 16-foot trailers, pulled alongside the Federal Building, downtown, blocking the left lane of the entire block. The convoy was a red flag in this post 9/11 climate.

Four security guards, one with his gun drawn, raced toward the vehicles, demanding that the trailers be opened.

The prime suspect? Clermont Northeastern School Superintendent Neil Leist and his posse of high-class Dumpster divers. Security didn't get the memo that they would be there to collect the entire contents of the FBI's ninth floor - items that outlived their usefulness for the agency, but worth the price of gold to a cash-strapped rural school district.

In fact, Leist has saved the 1,800-student district hundreds of thousands of dollars by rounding up more than a $1 million worth of high-quality used furniture, computers, kitchen equipment and more from businesses and government agencies.

"It's had a huge impact," said Mike Freeman, a Clermont Northeastern School Board member. "Put in his words, it's stretching taxpayers' dollars. He's very good at bagging."

Leist's office is a testimonial to his prowess as a scavenger hunter:

-His desk came from the FBI.

-His computer is from the closed Ford plant at Batavia.

-Filing cabinets and a conference table were removed from an Ohio Department of Education office that had closed.

-Chairs and the pictures on the wall were donated by 3M, which shut down recently in Union Township.

He manages to get these items by offering to take everything and move it, saving companies and agencies thousands of dollars in fees to hire trucking firms to haul the equipment away. It also gives businesses a tax break. Now, when some of these entities have excess property, they call him first.

The initiative began about three years ago, after Leist was named superintendent in April 2007. The district was struggling financially, so tough times called for thinking outside the box to stretch the district's $16.5 million budget.

.
The school board here in Wake County NC just asked for a $750 million bond, and they got it passed. [we pronounce that name like the waves behind a boat normally, but it's pronounced 'WACKY', when referring to the school board] Those of us who fought it said it was too much and that they'd just ask for more later, instead of being made resposible for what they already had. Before the first payment was ever made from that bond, they indeed asked for ANOTHER BOND of $400 million.
.
Evidently people are smarter in OH than they are here.

Mr. Leist is obviously a student of my simplicity theory. He didn't need congressional approval, or council meetings, reports, findings, or sub committees, etc. He just came up with a simple and very sensible idea, and did it. Good for him!

I'd suggest Mr. Leist be our next president, but he's obviously too smart to be a politician. And since he didn't take the stuff and put it on Ebay and pocket the money for himself, he's also too honest for public office.

I sent this story to my School Board Office. We just had an election and it turned the old board hierarchy on their ear. The new board members outnumber the old. One of the NEW board members sent me an e-mail this afternoon! OH, My HEART.

He said he saw this OH guy on Fox this morning, as did I originally, and thanked me for sending it in, and that he appreciated my interest.

Two things come to mind.

1st...he's NOT watching the news on the normal MSM, and that speaks volumes. (I can't wait for the 2010 elections now, more new blood statewide I hope)

2nd...in all the years I've been bitching to the morons at the board, how come a NEW guy is the only one to ever answer me, or even acknowledge my e-mail? Could that be why the old guy lost the election? Hmmm, could it BE?

ALL of our new School Bord Members ran on the same platform. Neighborhood Schools instead busing to achieve that all important diversity. The bottom line here became, people want ALL the schools to work better, regardless of the racial makeup of the neighborhood they lived in. Plus, even those from the darker areas of town saw that the whole racial reassignment thing was a boondoggle. And it never brought up anyone's grades either.

Just when they get their ducks rowed up here on the school board, I'm moving to a different county. But that's a rural county and they all go to the closest schools.

But Spider, it's NOT just Leist, it's the state too. Mrs. Schteveo has been doing computer work for 20 years. She's been turned down by three different counties, they HAD TO have new or almost new stuff. Or, if she ONLY had 30 or 40 computers to donte, they wouldn't accept them, what they really need is 400 or 500. They would never listen to her about 40 from NORTEL, 40 from SAS, 40 from Cisco, blah, blah, blah, soon becomes 400. And also, until the last 2 or 3 years, the schools were NOT ALLOWED to take freebies like Mr. Leist rounds up by state, local or combined board edict.

Stupid.

Not so stupid when you think about all the kick-backs these hacks get from the companies they do business with, something they can't do with Mrs. Schteveo's offer.

I agree with Spidey. Good for him!

QUOTABLE QUOTES

Call me a cranky libertarian conservative, but just once I would like to hear a candidate for president answer a question by saying, "Sorry, the Constitution limits the role of the federal government -- the issue you're asking about is one for the states or the private sector, not Washington."
– Jeff Jacoby

But not all the possible donating companies or agencies could or would be in line for the kickback scheme. So that can't be the only reason. I think it's the idiot administrators in District "X", trying to one up their colleagues in District "Y".

"Oh, we have only the LATEST technology in our schools!!"

I've heard the administrators locally make those kind of statements when grilled by the parents in school board meetings about technology. What they won't say is that they've got three NEW, Dell laptops that only the Superintendent and his staff get to touch. Nor do they say they bought them off the Dell website, at full price, instead of putting out a competitive bid. And to compound their stupidity, they've turned down 211, 2 year old laptops that would have been free. All because it would raise the "aggregate age" of the current school technology.

Another reason that our school board turned over, the old board used too many buzzwords like "aggregate age" that mean nothing in the overall picture of the school system when our children and grandchildren can't frigging read.

I think the bottom line is the same Steve. Somebody's putting a lot of cash in their pockets with their current (and irrational) system. And when these low-level politcal hacks do that, they don't want anybody messin with it!

Heck, our schools would be better off if the "aggregate age" of their stuff was higher. I would rather have my kids using a math/english/anything book from 50 years ago than what's out now.
And don't even get me started on money. Our district's school (in CT, huzzah) is like (virtually) all govt schools: "We need more money to properly educate your children!" *koff*bs!*
Every year at budget time (and the school has a budget SEVERAL times that of the town itself), it comes out that either A. money has just evaporated into thin air, or gone into some mysterious "fund", or B. was spent last minute on something the school had NO need for (a big honkin' printing press comes to mind) just to claim that yes, all those dollars are necessary, keep 'em comin'.
