Just eat twice as much?

.
First President Bush says he didn't like broccoli, now we find out that it wasn't good for us ANYWAY?! Oh man!!
.
If the economy isn't grim enough for you, just check out the February issue of the Journal of HortScience, which contains a report on the sorry state of American fruits and veggies. Apparently produce in the U.S. not only tastes worse than it did in your grandparents' days, it also contains fewer nutrients — at least according to Donald R. Davis, a former research associate with the Biochemical Institute at the University of Texas, Austin.
.
Two items come to mind. First, Time never misses a chance to mention the economy. (they blame Bush) Second, can't President BOHICA just do the loaves and fishes thing, and restore the nutrients?
.
What I want to know is why fruits and vegetables only stay fresh for 15 minutes after I bring them home from the grocery or farmers market? 20 or 30 years go, I was buying fruits and veggies, in bulk for restaurants too, and fresh produce lasted twice as long as it does now. Planned obsolescence in produce?
.
.
Schteveo really like broccoli

I blame the illegal aliens who pick this stuff.
Oh, and George Bush

Monoculture farming practices — another hallmark of the Big Ag industry — have also led to soil-mineral depletion, which, in turn, affects the nutrient content of crops.

Maybe it would be a good idea to let the land rest, say...every seventh year...(as mentioned in Exodus) so it can rebuild the nutrients.

C-Bug,
or they could use they kind of fertilizers in the U.S. that they use damn near everywhere else in the world. Composted human and animal poop. Yeah I know, EEWWWWWWW!

Ever eat fruits and veggies from South or Central America.

People poop.

As someone who once worked in the poop fertilizer industry (no joke) about 30-something years ago, I can attest that CHICKEN poop is the "richest" poop.

A little dab'll do ya!

However, in California we lived in a house with a septic & leach field in the back. Over which we had 2 cherry trees, an apricot tree, an apple tree, and a pomegranate tree. All made the biggest/healthiest/shiniest fruit I've seen.

Jimbo,
when I worked in the chicken bid'ness, I went to California a number of times. The guy who was my counter part at Foster Farms in the central valley, swore by poultry poo as fertilizer. He had 6 or 8 of those blue, plastic chemical buckets he made a fertilizer "tea" in. He'd mix "X" pounds of poop with rain water he collect from his gutters. The "X" is because he kept it secret. He wins awards all over Cali for his veggies.

His garden was the biggest, richest I've ever seen. Great tomatoes, cukes, lettuce and cabbage the size of basketballs.

If I ever own another yard, I'll have a few chickens. They eat the bugs, and they poop fertilizer! Eggs are good for you. It's a win / win.

Since most of what we eat comes from "somewhere else", do we really know what we're eating anymore? I've heard the FDA's name is being changed to the FUBAR.
