Some Good News For A Change

U.S. Senate Votes to UpholdSecond Amendment in Washington, D.C.

Thursday, February 26, 2009

Fairfax, Va. - The United States Senate has voted, with overwhelming bipartisan support, to adopt an amendment offered by Senator John Ensign (R-NV) that seeks to protect the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens in the District of Columbia. The amendment, attached to S.160, the D.C. Voting Rights Act, will repeal restrictive gun control laws passed by the District of Columbia's (D.C.) city council after the landmark D.C. v. Heller Supreme Court decision. The vote margin was 62-36.

"Today's vote brings us one step closer to restoring the Second Amendment freedom of law-abiding D.C. residents," said NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox. "It's ludicrous that good people in our nation's capital continue to be harassed as they try to defend themselves and their loved ones in their own homes. This vote reinforces the historic Heller ruling."

After the Heller ruling, the D.C. city council passed a law requiring would-be gun owners to pay a registration fee, pass a 20-question multiple choice test, take a five-hour training course, undergo an invasive background check every six years, re-register any firearm every three years, and finally, submit all handguns for ballistics testing. Current D.C. law also bans an overwhelming majority of firearms commonly used for self-defense. This Ensign Amendment would also remedy that unjust practice.

"NRA would like to thank the lead sponsor, Sen. John Ensign for his efforts to reform D.C.'s gun laws and enable folks to protect their property and their loved ones," concluded Cox. "It's time for leaders in Washington to wake up to the fact that the Supreme Court decision is now the law of the land."

Good news? Are you really falling for the bone to in the end give DC representation in the senate.

Missy,
I heard that last night too. But allow me my silly foibles.

How in the hell, does giving D.C. 2nd Amendment Rights, free and clear finally, lead to having a voting seat in the House or Senate?

I didn't see the connection last night and I still don't see it in the light of the day.

I'll take the bone.
Like Spidey said, it's good news for a change.

Missy, with the way things are going, and will continue to go, we had better recognize and appreciate "anything" that we get. DC is NOT a state, and until that's changed, they can not have a senator.

People in DC whine that they have to pay taxes, but don't get a vote on laws.

Because of that darned old constitution, they don't deserve a vote as they are not a state.

So what to do?
- DC residents will no longer pay federal income tax, only DC taxes.
- Federal government will no longer pay for DC services (cleaning up the mall, extra support for police during parades, etc.)

Could work...

If that happens, who will pick up DC's massive welfare tab?

I believe it would take a Constitutional amendment to change DC's status. Highly unlikely.

no, the Anointed One (in my picture with HLF sniffing his butt) will just say
"we won the election so we make the laws" & DC will then have 2 Senators & 1 Representative, all Democrat of course.

WASHINGTON (CNN) 2/27/09:

– Another prominent Republican told the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday that the president’s spending plans are pushing the country to the brink of socialism.

Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, the only member of the senate to earn a perfect rating from the American Conservative Union, called President Obama “the world’s best salesman of socialism” on Friday in describing his prime time speech earlier this week.

DeMint, a fierce opponent of government expansion, told the CPAC crowd that conservatives might have to “take to the streets to stop America’s slide into socialism.”

His remarks comes a day after Mike Huckabee told the conference of conservative activists that “the Union of American Socialist Republics is being born” with the president’s stimulus package.

“Lenin and Stalin would love this stuff,” Huckabee said of the government bailing out financial institutions

Steve .. remember the NAME of the bill. The purpose of the bill was to give DC residents a member of the house to set up a precedent to get senate representation. They added the gun part to the bill because they needed republican support. Republicans being idiots fell for the ruse.

Missy, What IS the name on the bill?

The DC Voting Rights Act.

Now there's some useful information. Typical, but sad.

I suppose that the part-time residents who work for other states, members of Congress, will get to vote at home AND in D.C.?

Steve,

...Only if you register with Acorn. As a special bonus, they throw in automatic voting registration for another state, and provide a prefilled ballot.
