NY Times:
Mr. Daschle withdrew a day after Mr. Obama unequivocally declared that he would stand behind him as his problems over income tax arrears were scrutinized on Capitol Hill. The nominee’s tax issues had developed into a troublesome distraction for the president, who entered the White House pledging to hold his people to the highest ethical standards.
The president said he accepted Mr. Daschle’s sudden withdrawal “with sadness and regret.”
Later, the chief White House spokesman, Robert Gibbs, said Mr. Daschle had made his own decision to withdraw. “He did not get a signal” from the White House, Mr. Gibbs said.
But there was no suggestion either that President Obama had tried to persuade Mr. Daschle not to pull out, just as there was no hint that the president had tried to dissuade Nancy Killefer, his choice for chief White House performance officer, from withdrawing earlier in the day. She, too, cited tax arrears, in her case District of Columbia unemployment taxes.
“They both decided that their nominations would distract,” Mr. Gibbs said at a news briefing.

Scuzz-bag politicos not only feel they are exempt from the taxes they impose on us little people - they're also exempt from paying FICA and simply expect us little people to pay them full, inflated wages for life.
The only good Washington politician is an embalmed one.

Nerd,
I couldn't help but peek at your profile. My wife and I both attended TT (but in the early 70's); my wife has lived in Boerne & Kerrville - we now reside in Austin but frequent the Camp Wood area where my in-laws live.
I can't help but think if we bumped into one another on the street there could be a flash of recognition.
Well, they're being transparent. You can see them for the hypocritical assholes they truly are.
OT
Jimbo,
if ya' been hangin' around Kerrville, "bumped" is the term I'd use. Most everyone I know who goes there kinda just bumps around. I think there must be something in the (bong) water!!
Barney Frank is offering to get behind each and every one of his colleagues.
We probably did bump into each other somewhere along the way, Jimbo. I was at TT from '63-'66, when the dean of men decided that he'd had enough of my act. I was raised in Dallas. Ever been to the County Line, The Broken Spoke or Cisco's? Are you in Austin, now? I must be confused. I somehow got the idea you were in Hawaii.
Nerd - I work in Honolulu but live in Austin.
Hell-uv-a-commute.
nerd: most of us go back to TT, but tongue-tied didn't exist that far back
County line? Wasn't it Pinky's that had the fried gizzards?
TT = Texas Tech, Red Raiders, Guns Up, in beautiful Lubbock, Texas, where nothing can sneak up on you because it's so flat you can see whatever it is coming for three days, the hub city of the South plains and the largest "dry" city in America (when I was there) and the former home of Bobby Knight. When I was there, J. T. King was the football coach. He had the bright idea to punt the ball back to Texas (then #1 in the nation) on the opening kickoff of the game. The ball went straight up in the air and came down on about the 35 yard line. Texas scored on their first play. I (and a lot of other people in the stands) decided that the thing to do was get drunk.
"I screwed up"

Can you spell DUH!?
If it was you or me, some dude would be ramming his pee rod up our poop chutes by now against my will, in a cage.
