The city of Los Angeles, plagued by 23,000 violent gang crimes since 2004, including 784 murders and 12,000 felony assaults, announced Tuesday that it had won its first civil judgment, for $5 million, against a criminal gang that had dominated the heroin trade downtown for decades.

Every car, couch, CD, boombox, HDTV, and chrome wheel in the Barrio that belongs to the gang bangers.
Part of the (liberal) myth is that these guys are poor people just pissed off because of their poorness. But in fact the head honchos, and many soldiers too, live well, own real estate and horde cash by the barrels full. Just like the Mafia used to do.
These guys and this lifestyle are why I think we need to kill the income taxes and go to a federal sales tax. It gets tax money from guys who live off the traditional work grid, into the tax paying club.
In addition, I think that the federal government should be going after all these guys for tax evasion. That's how they got Capone.

As for the topic. Apparently, L.A., the anti-reality capital of the world, is being forced to deal with that one thing they seem to hate. Reality! It never fails. Of course, their mega-gang crisis is due completely to their over-tolerance of gangs, and just about everything else. Gangs in many of Mexifornia's cities have more power, brains and weapons than the govt.
But IMO, this latest tactic (more a PR stunt than anything else) won't do very much for several reasons, one of which was stated by Missy. These gangs deal in cash, making them almost invisible. Oh sure, they can take their chrome rims, low-rider cars, diamond-encrusted teeth, and 5 million watt stereos. So what! On paper, they only have their nanny-state checks, which no one would dare touch.
When the feds went after NYC's organized crime families, they weren't able to seize many assets because those guys weren't so stupid as to have anything in their own name. (you can't take "B's" property because you "think" it belongs to "A") For the most part, they were convicted of conspiracy, a charge far easier to prove, via wire-tap, infiltration, and/or old-fashioned rats. Simply taking property from these gangs may help LA bring in revenue via auctions, etc., (probably the real reason) but it won't do much else. They'll need a better plan than that, assuming they're sincere.
I go to Mayo for an ElectroMyoGram next Thursday to differentiate absolutely between C5-6 & C6-7 radiculopathy from a brachial plexus neuritis.
That's early in the morning. After the EMG I go directly from there to the Mayo neurosurgical clinic and eval the report with the neurosurgeon. Then when the result is obvious that it IS Cervical Foramenal Stenosis, his office will schedule a surgical suite.
I should have a date by the end of next Friday.
And Jeez Missy, I might go and die in surgery in a coupla weeks and you STILL don't talk to me?

the only thing to say is, I'm not sure the gangs in L.A. are as crafty as the mob guys were. The mob had NY, greasy, low life lawyers working the angles. In L.A. they're using Legal Aid and public defenders for legal matters, if other stories of their "downtroddeness" are to be believed.

You make a good point Steve, but with the bleeding-heart courts in Mexifornia, the legal-Aid lawyers will probably end up doing better than those NYC hot-shots who didn't do so well at all. But they did get paid. Up front!
