WASHINGTON (AP) — They can't match Harry Potter yet, but scientists are moving closer to creating a real cloak of invisibility.
Researchers at Duke University, who developed a material that can "cloak" an item from detection by microwaves, report that they have expanded the number of wavelengths they can block.
In 2006 the team reported they had developed so-called metamaterials that could deflect microwaves around a three-dimensional object, essentially making it invisible to the waves.
The system works like a mirage, where heat causes the bending of light rays and cloaks the road ahead behind an image of the sky.

if you're like most of us, it's SONIC cloaking you need, so as not to hear most of what's going on. OR, we need personal cloaking devices for us, to hide from them periodically.
What amazes me is that many people mocked these guys just two years ago. "...can't be done...never miniaturize...too much power...blah, blah, blah". I guess the people who say those things don't remember that the first true computer, Eniac, took up almost 700 sq ft, weighed about 28 tons and needed 150 kW of power.

The IBM CEO (?) who said there was a possible need for 5 or 6 computers worldwide.
OR
Bill Gates saying the maximum amount of computer memory anyone would ever need was 64K.
There are about a million other such examples I'm sure.

Just to remind you Star Trek fans, use of the cloaking device is unethical. Therefore, the UFP rejected the technology as standard issue. After peace with the Clingons, only the bad guy Clingons and Romulans used the device.
