So proud of myself

I was reading a bit of CNN during my lunch today, and after reading a story about Obama’s Inauguration, I was silly enough to read the comments section.

One comment started with the very outrageous, almost offensive sentence:

“THIS IS MOST AWESOME THING IN OUR HISTORY"

And yes, it was in all-caps. The entire posting was in all-caps. It went on to describe a process through which this person had written a song to the tune of “Awesome God” (you know, “our God is an awesome God, he reigns from heaven above…”) which was in praise to Barack Obama. As you all know, I am quite perplexed about why everyone is so taken by this guy, as he has yet to do anything, ever, in his entire career. Not just anything GOOD, mind you, but ANYTHING AT ALL. So, I drafted this reply and posted it to the CNN board. I am sure it won’t be posted, as CNN typically won’t post anything “controversial” (in their eyes) on their comments pages, but here it is, in it’s glory:

Surely, you must be joking. You think the inauguration of our next president, something which has occurred 44 times over the past 230 years with almost tedious inevitability, eclipses the winning of our independence against all odds, the freeing of the slaves, our victory over evil in WWII, the fall of the Berlin wall, our landing on the moon, and countless other great things we, as a nation, have done over the years?

This is mundane. This is the inauguration of a president, and nothing more. I am afraid that folks who are writing songs for this moment, who are fainting at the mere sight of their almost God-like figure of a president, will be greatly disappointed when President Obama turns out to be exactly what he is:

Just another president.

Even if he is a GREAT president, and for our sakes, I hope that he is (though I have my reservations) so the heck what? He is not a god, and all of the evils and inequities in this world that you may think he will cure will still be there, even after 8 years. I promise.

Relax a bit, stop writing sonnets in His praise, and try cautious optimism on for size. The fall won't be so far when you realize the inevitable truths: that Obama is just a man, and a politician at that.

I thought it was a clever, respectful, and insightful response to such an outrageous and patently offensive claim that the election of Barack Obama as POTUS is the greatest thing we’ve ever done. Tell that to a veteran of the Normandy invasion. My guess is that you’ll receive a much-deserved smack in the head.

Japan learns English from Obama speech textbook
Kubota Yoko Kubota – Tue Jan 20, 3:59 pm ET

TOKYO (Reuters) – President-elect Barack Obama's speeches are proving a best-seller in Japan -- as an aid to learning English.

*snicker* SO MANY racially insensitive jokes could be made about this...

I wonder how long the effect of Kool-Aid lasts. And Lady-Bug is right. It seems that almost every program, movie, and commercial had blacks in it today. Is this how a minority becomes the majority?

Sore fuckin loser.

Born into money, got his first job at 40 after drinking and drugging through his earlier years, manages to get elected President and totally screws up the country so badly it rivals the worst times in ourt history.

Born to a single mother, overcomes the challenge of being mixed race, gets an incredible education and then serves his community, not just going for the money, gets elected President as the first "black", inspires millions of people.

How can you even compare those two humans?

Much as I usually like 'em, I noticed last night that the History Channel was running a two hour show about FDR. Tell me THAT'S a coincidence.

I saw a new commercial for Starbucks this morning. It was done to rap music. Starbucks!

Anon,
you're evidently out of touch with this phenomenon.

There have been, for several years, all sorts of commercials, with rap / hip - hop music, EVEN during NASCAR races. ( da' bruthas are dead into NASCAR, right?) I have commented on that here, and at the old site.

And still today....the Planet of the Apes.

Uhhh, I wasn't, idiot.

Try adding reading comprehension to the top of the list of all the other skills you really need to work on.

And if McCain had won, and there was this widespread orgy of mania sweeping the nation, I would have posted the same thing, only without the "no accomplishments" part (as McCain actually has some), so it has nothing to do with me being a "sore loser". People getting this emotionally vested in a MAN; a POLITICIAN, at that, is not healthy, and is setting them all up for a big fall when he turns out to be something less than the messiah that they seem to be needing; when he turns out to just be exactly what he is. A man. Flesh, bone, blood, and soul. Nothing more. That should be enough, but for many, it does not seem to be, and it worries me, for them.

Born to a single mother,

Not sure how this even matters. he was mostly raised by his Grandparents, until she married Soetoro and moved him to Indonesia with them for a couple years, then sent him back to his Grandparents again. They, by the way, were married, and very wealthy. Don't give me that "grew up in hardship" bullcrap. This guy lived high on the hog his entire life, going to private schools, living in big, luxurious houses. He has no idea what it means to grow up in hardship.

overcomes the challenge of being mixed race

Big deal. So did I. It wasn't that big a thing, especially in Hawaii. it's not like he lived down South for crissakes...

gets an incredible education

Cool, lets see the transcripts if his education was so incredible.

Ooohhh, you mean, he won't release them? Besides, education is important, but does not qualify a person for a presidency.

and then serves his community

As a community organizer, which BY HIS OWN ADMISSION...

I'll say it again...

BY. HIS. OWN. ADMISSION. He was a failure as. Read his books, where he admits that he was a failure as a community organizer. So he failed as a community organizer. Lets make him a state senator and see how he does there...

What? Over 3/4 of the votes put to the senate in his tenure, he either didn't vote on, or voted "present"? Hmmm, not much accomplishment there, is there? So, he wasn't a very good state senator. lets make him a federal senator, huh? He runs unopposed after his team hatchets his only real competition by bringing up the fact that he was into having sex with his wife while others watched. Not very leftist or tolerant of him, was it?

So, he is a federal senator. Now what? He spends his entire two years as a federal senator RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. No accomplishments there, besides pushing through a slam dunk bill or two written BY OTHER SENATORS. So, he wasn't even a very good federal senator.

I know, LETS MAKE HIM PRESIDENT!!!

gets elected President as the first "black", inspires millions of people.

Yes, he has inspired a lot of people, and yes, he ran the best organized, most well-run campaign, possibly of all time. But what has he done to inspire people?

Talk?

Thus, we arrive at my one and only point. Talk is cheap. Lets not blow our wad on this guy, lets not invest in him so fully and emotionally that we CRY when he walks past, lets not put every ounce of hope that we have into this guy, UNTIL HE ACTUALLY DOES SOMETHING TO EARN THAT.

Like I said, step it down a notch from fanatic radicalism, to cautious optimism. Is that so difficult or offensive to you?

More sore loser talk from a guy who praises the fratboy idiot prez who DESTROYED the world economy.

Bush will burn in Hell just like Reagan is. All republicans eventually end up there.

I defy you to find a place, ANYPLACE, where I have EVER praised W.

of course, in your mind, it doesn't matter. I loves W, because it doesn't fit your worldview that I am thinking and intelligent enough to disagree with him.

That being said, i really like how you responded to the things I said intelligently, with reasoned response to the truths that I laid out...

Oh, wait... you DIDN'T.

Keep calling me a sore loser all you want. I am a sore loser. i am sore because no matter which way the election went, I would have lost. Choose between the geriatric, who is out of touch and IMHO not presidential material, or the black guy who nobody seems to know anything about, and has no accomplishments. So yeah, call me a sore loser if you want, but I ain't sore because McCain lost, that's for damn sure.
