Mom Who?

Here are two lines from this story:

A homeless woman who died after writhing in pain on a hospital floor for nearly an hour could have survived if she had received proper treatment, a county report concedes.

and

It concludes that the county should attempt to settle a $45 million lawsuit filed by the woman's adult children...

Wait a minute.

Your mother's passing is worth $45 million to you, but you didn't care enough about her when she was alive to give her a place to live? At least I'm assuming that her children have homes. Maybe they're all homeless...

Kinda like Obama treats his Auntie in the Boston Ghetto (like there's any other part).

Wow. You people are harsh. I'm sure that each and every one of you can and has devoted your lives to caring for aged relatives. Not one of you has ever thought, "I should call or go see Mom today" and then haven't because life got in the way.

More proof of the bitter, resentful, angry basis to conservatism.

I not only keep track of my mother (who's in her late 70's & lives not too far away), but I also keep an eye on 2 elderly ladies in my neighborhood who don't have much family around and who I've grown very fond of.

Quit judging us by your own miserable self.

I fart in your general direction.

HFL - I don't quite get the comparison. There is a huge difference between not calling every week and not making sure basic needs are met.

I promise you that if I knew my mom, sister, uncle, cousin or nephew was living on the streets or about to be out of their housing, I would do what I could to help.

I don't care if you believe me or not.

HLF;

THat's a pretty big jump in logic and reason, to say that because we didn't go see our mothers last week that it is excusable for these people to let her be homeless and out on the street.

My Mother isn't even elderly, and she lived with me for six months last year while she got her finances in order after she lost her job.

There is no WAY, NO WAY, that a relative any closer than a second cousin in my family is going to go homeless as long as I have the ability to do something about it, and sure as HELL not my mother.

Even friends would be included in this.

I sold a car that I had no intention of selling ever, last year so I could give my friend the money after he broke his neck in a bicycle accident and became temporarily (thank God!) paralyzed. He lost his job, had no insurance, and was about to lose his house. I paid his 1,200 dollar mortgage for 5 months while he recovered so that he and his wife didn't lose the place, using the proceeds from that car sale.

So speak for yourself, douchebag.

And as for the hospital, all I can say is WTF?

Why was the emergency room so packed that they left here there to die for that long?

Could it possibly be due to the fact that the only way that many people in America access healthcare is through the emergency room?

Why is that the case?

This is yet further proof that we need to set up free clinics for the uninsured. For every emergency room, there needs to be a free clinic. Check out my proposal on teh old site for more details. It would be funded by companies that choose not to insure their employees, and also via the elimination of a few governmental grant programs.

I don't care what else you want to say about our healthcare system, but when the e-rooms in our hospitals are clogged with people that want to lance a boil, and real emergencies get lost in transit as a result of the backup, something needs to be done.

Emergency rooms should be for just that. Emergencies.

HLF: this hoser loser spawned incubus and sucubus who only want to ebay her gonads.

I take care of my elderly mother. Did same with elderly grandparents. But you want to take my money that I use for my family that I earned and give it to loser hoser spawn.

By the way I was worried that hoser loser was you and my playtoy would be gone.

Well of course. You're all Florence Nightingales tending to the poor and the sick.

I mentioned that to Amelia Earhart when we were having tea with Bigfoot last week.

Hey Goob, no response to my Fannie & Freddie truths?

HLF;

You go ahead and pretend that you know our stories and what is true in our lives.

You continue to accuse me of being a white male, well-off and with money to spare.

You continue to accuse us all of lying about taking care of family and friends.

I really don't care. You seem to think that it is totally acceptable to let your mother be homeless. I guess that's your cup of tea, but it sure isn't mine.

As to being rich, if you'd spent even a moment of time on this board READING instead of prancing around like a spoiled child bragging about your bankrupt ideologies, you would know that I am not rich, nor am I from a rich background. My family of 5 lived in a 21 foot motorhome for 18 months because we couldn't afford an apartment. It was broken down, and parked on a lot owned by a family friend. We never took anything from anyone else to stay afloat. We all did our part.

Now, I'm college educated and earning a middle-class income, and am 5 years into paying off a 30 year mortgage on a 130,000 house. My wife and I drive 15 year old cars, and struggle to make ends meet.

Amazingly, I owe not a single penny of college debt, because I WORKED my way through college. College wasn't fun for me, it was the hardest thing I've ever done. ost people look back longingly. YOu couldn't PAY me enough to do it again. I pulled 21 credit semesters while working full time over 5 years. Paid for it all except for about 5,000 that I earned in scholarships.

As to me being white and priveledged, and having no understand of being oppressed, I am more Native American that Obama is black. You want to talk about an oppressed people? We weren't just made slaves, we were poisoned, slaughtered, and made to be drunken fools by the white man's greed and ugliness.

So fuck you.

As far as your response to Fanny and Freddy myths, I saw what you posted, and I really don't care. For every piece of legislation passed and signed BY BILL CLINTON, BTW, that came from a republcina house, I can show you legislation that "could have or might have" caused this problem that came from the other side.

Your argument that it is totally the fault of republican policies has been shown to be false. If you are not willing to listen, them I'm no longer willing to talk.

WAY off topic: Was Goober your nickname in grade school? Did you go to school in SD? Just wondering if I knew you once upon a time....

Heidi;

Lived in Washington State my entire life.

My guess is that we've never met.

Why, did you know a dirt poor half Indian kid named Goober when you went to high school?

There is no mention of where the woman's relatives live, but presumably it was near enough to know of her death. In their defense, there are some people who are too impared by mental illness or substance abuse to accept help even if were offered. It is a hospital staff's reasponsibility and a legal requirement to provide the care necessary to stabilize a patient who arrives at their emergency room in an emergent condition.

Annie, you are absolutely right. I had a cousin that took to drugs after dropping out of high school. The family did everything that they could have done to help her, and she chose not to take the help. She is out looking for her next high, or dead for all I know. So you are absolutely right. We don't know the full story here, and probably are being a bit presumptuous to assume that we do.

Thanks for setting me straight.

Annie said...

Hi, Goober,

It's not a matter of setting you straight. It was just that I worked in the mental health and substance abuse field of healthcare for a number of years and saw close up unfortunate people such as your cousin. Unfortunately, there are some of us for whom help is impossible.

here is the news
if the supremes declare Obama ineligible to be POTUS, then Hilary is president.

how this works, the law sez that if no one gets 270, then the House votes for one of the top 3 electoral vote getters.
All Hillary needs is for one of the Obama electoral voters to vote for her, She only needs one electoral vote.
The the democratic house makes her president!

but that doesn't entitle her heirs to the powerball mega millions at our expense either

I can't believe you guys are actually explaining yourselves and defending your actions to this HLF asshole.

The instant money grab by the kids should tell you what color they are. Meaning, getting a new Benz with 50" chrome rims is what's important, not caring for mom!

Annie said...

It does under our current legal system if the hospital staff did not meet the appropriate standard of care. In any case, hospitals today are de facto run by the risk managers. Apparently, the all-seeing, all-knowing risk managers did not want this case to be litigated. If I were them, neither would I. There is no telling what would be the verdict of a jury if this case ever got before them.

Goob,

hell, we might be distantly related. I'm 1/4 Cherokee.

Every time I hear blacks whine about how their ancestors were treated, I think how mine were treated.

What happened to the Native Americans makes the Holocaust look like a birthday party in comparison. Being shot, burned alive, starved, poisoned or infected with the white man's diseases that they had zero resistance to pretty much sums up what happened to 10 million plus (conservative estimate) original inhabitants of the U.S.

The Liberal loons and their Communist/Socialist fellow travelers are hell bent on destroying the America we all knew and loved.

The above story of the woman abandoned by her family to die alone and forgotten in some hospital ER(she was homeless but had living relatives who are now suing) and the herd of shoppers squishing the security guard are indicative of the new, and very prevalent, "Me first!" attitude.

I resent the shit out of you even thinking I've ever looked the other way when a family member or close friend needed help. Don't brand me, or any others, until you see it , as a fact, happening.

I think, back in grade and high school, your mouth got you beat up more then just a few times.

HLF,

I have been woefully absent from this forum for a while due to defending the country that you appear to hate so much in its present incarnation.

The present administration leaves a lot to be desired but IMHO is still far better than what the incomming regime appears to be preparing for us.

The forum was set up for the exchange of ideas and opions. We are a small family and squabble among ourselves all of the time. Anyone is invited to participate. Granted, on the basic level most here are conservative but still have a wide range of views depending on the topic. You seem to want to come in and just spit venom. there is no desire to actually find any middle ground, just instill disgust.

All that does is confirm that someone of my political and moral persuasion is justified in stereotyping someone of your apparent political and moral persuasion.

I may not be the norm in conservative circles, but when someone says that libs give more to charity, I think to myself that it is easy for me to do taxes, I move the decimal one space to the left from my gross income....and start adding from there. I know I gave away at least that much.

on this topic, I know where every one of my 112 cousins, second cousins, aunts, uncles, parents, and grand parents are. In 1995 when my great grandfather passed away, the only reason it wasn't me that found him , was that granny went in to check on him while I started his breakfast. He was tended 20 hours a day by one of his descendants. Of the above listed people, the only 2 I wouldn't give my last 2 cents to are the two currently getting three hots and a concrete slab by the state penal system.

Please cut back with the venom. Exchange an original idea.
You don't have to agree with everyone, even some of the time.

there is a pre-columbian text of a now extinct society. They had a form of democracy for nearly 100 years. A group of people decided that they wanted a king instead of an elected leader. they even went to war over it. It took a while, but eventually they won, and the civilization became extinct shortly thereafter.

My thought....it's a cliche....you sleep warm and comfy at night because there are men willing to do violence in your behalf.

those same men and women are intimately familiar what it means to live in a socialist or tyranical society.
a) we've seen it over and over again in the miriad of exotic places we have worked and lived.
b) it is part of our lives in that socialized medicine is the only thing available
c) we fight against it and hope that someday we can rejoin "real" american society
d) we know that the only two things you should and honestly can rely on is God and yourself....your not paranoid, everyone really is out to get you...unless you know of another person willing to jump on a grenade for YOU.....and I willing to bet you don't

"Why was the emergency room so packed that they left here there to die for that long?"

Goob, i don't know where you live, but here in the real world of NYC, the emergency rooms are overflowing because we have over 1.5 MILLION illegals living in this city, and they all go straight to the local emergency room for everything!

Also, all of the so-called poor people, the one's we're told have no health coverage, ALL have Medicaid, a form of insurance that many doctors refuse to accept, so they're in the emergency rooms as well.

If you've ever spent time in any of those emergency rooms, as i have, seeing people laying around for hours and hours is common. Most of those people actually die from waiting! Why? Because most of the hospitals here are staffed with foreign "doctors" who come here for experience, training, and God knows what else. This is especially true at night.

When i was working, my partner and i had a standing rule. When something happens to one of us, as happened on several occasions, (gunshot wound, knife wound, etc.) STAY AWAY from the hospitals and take me to a local doctors office. In that way, at least i know i'll get to see a real doctor who actually speaks English and knows what he's doing!

Anonymous said...

"Why was the emergency room so packed that they left here there to die for that long?"

It was a rhetorical question, Spider. I knew the answer already. I work closely with healthcare folks day in and day out and runny noses in the emergency room is one of their biggest complaints about our current system. It is the only way to get free healthcare right now, and folks use it as a free clinic instead of an emergency room, and folks like me with huge chainsaw gouges across their shin wait while the doctors lance someone's boil.

THat is why I won't say our system is BROKEN, but that it certainly needs room for improvement.

I don't like the idea of people being on the dole, it removes their responsibility for themselves, and fosters an environment where people no longer do for them and theirs, and instead wait for the public trough to fill up again. However, I cannot fathom being part of an enlightened, civilized society where people die because they can't afford to buy health insurance. THat would preclude the society being enlightened and civilized, in my opinion.

That is why I am a proponent of free clinics being constructed next to every emergency room in america. The clinics would be funded in various ways, and would be staffed by interns out of med school, with a smaller staff of residents and at least one attending to supervise their efforts.

That way, a person can get their boil lanced without holding up a guy with a chansaw wound in his shin.

I'll see if i can look up the proposal I wrote on this and post it up again.

That is exactly why we need reform of the healthcare delivery system in the US.

Actually, yes.

I don't know about the dirt-poor part, but they weren't rolling in money.

I doubted that you were him (that would have been WAY to strange) but it was worth a shot.
